My personal theory:

I think after Sandy died, her spirit never actually left Bear. Instead, it stayed with him, and the moment he made the wish, Sandy’s spirit took over Nikki’s body.

There are several moments that make me think Nikki was behaving more like a cat than a human:

1)Her glowing eyes in the dark. Cats’ eyes reflect light, and the film repeatedly emphasizes Nikki’s glowing eyes.

2) Nikki waiting by the front door for over 8 hours. She stayed in the exact same spot until Bear got home, even to the point of soiling herself. That reminded me of how some cats patiently wait by the door for their owner to return, no matter how long it takes.

3) Bringing Sarah’s dead body back home. Cats are known to bring dead mice or prey back to their owners as a “gift.” Nikki did something similar by carrying Sarah’s body back to the house instead of leaving it behind.

It almost feels like Bear didn’t just get a magically obsessed version of Nikki. He got the unconditional loyalty he’d lost when Sandy died only this time, it was trapped inside Nikki’s body.

What makes Obsession even more tragic is the fact that Nikki kept leaving Bear signs because she truly believed he would save her.

She was trapped inside a version of herself that wasn’t real, yet fragments of the real Nikki kept breaking through, desperately trying to reach him.

But instead of seeing those warnings for what they were, Bear kept choosing the fantasy over the woman he claimed to love.

That’s why the scariest part of #Obsession was not the wish. It was realizing Nikki was still in there, waiting for someone to care enough to save her.
