asst prof in PChem @UNewHaven; teacher; spectroscopist; music addict; lifelong leftist, but my mom says i'm just a smartass. all opinions are utterly my own.
"Classical" in the 2020s just means white Christian fascism. Take it from this actually classically trained student -- there's plenty of proficiency visible in this country.
If schools and universities refuse to teach the great books of the West, we will do it ourselves.
We started an independent group to study the Great Texts of the Western canon, together.
...and we are now 600 members strong! 🙌
What should we add to our reading list??
actually, this is quite an accomplishment of Norman Rockwell, an artist seriously underestimated in his time; but better appreciated after the publication of Deborah Solomon's excellent study of Rockwell's work & life. here, the "mere" illustrator has created a most engaging & visually beautiful abstract painting; & his connoisseur is seriously puzzling over it, like much of educated America at that time.
The criticism of Emily Wilson's translation continuing is insane -- have you read her beautiful and critically researched introductions? A delight for academics and hobbyist readers alike; with those intros she could have done it in Esperanto for all I care.
In a world with the Unicode standard there's 0 reason to be salty about idiosyncratic or even radical translations of ancient texts. They're all publicly available in the original, and if you *really* wanna really read Constance Garnett do Dostoyevsky, just fucking open Google.
I had lunch with Pevear & Volokhonsky in college, and they told us we shouldn't look down at older translations of Russian texts, that there's nothing fundamentally inferior in Garnett. It's that translation is a conversation between languages, like that between two spouses.
Discourse about ideology in the academy always disregards the elephant in the room, which is that old faculty are being replaced by people radicalized by the Iraq War. That's a good enough reason to never want to hear another conservative say anything ever again.
There aren't a lot of chances for rampant public misogyny in the classics to be fair, gotta get a whole generation's worth of patriarchy disguised as collegiality out of their system
Not only have conservatives become vanishingly rare in academia, so have centrists. That’s how complete the left’s dominance is: Even moderates are now a fringe group in academia.

The Guardian’s panel has chosen the 100 greatest novels of all time and has put BELOVED second. That is among the most ludicrous aesthetic judgments in the annals of Western culture. Embarrassing tokenism.
Countless America deliberately earn no more than $15,000 a year so they can give their brat kids thousands of dollars worth of fish knowledge on the tax payer’s dime
