Carole Cadwalladr @carolecadwalla exposed one of the biggest political scandals in modern British history. Cambridge Analytica. Brexit dark money. Possible Russian influence in UK democracy. The kind of journalism that wins Pulitzer nominations and keeps people in power very nervous.

So what happened next?

Arron Banks the man who made the biggest single political donation in UK history at around £9 million to Brexit campaigns, sued her personally. Not The @observer , which published her work for years. Not @TEDTalks, which hosted her talk. Her. Individually. A freelance journalist.

The suit was over one sentence in a 2019 TED Talk and a single tweet, in which she said Banks had lied about a secret relationship with the Russian government. Banks denied it. He had, however, admitted meeting Russian embassy officials multiple times more than he originally told a Parliamentary committee.

@guardian, her own publisher, declined to fund her defence.

She crowdfunded her legal costs from 29,000 members of the public.

She faced potential costs of up to £1 million. She eventually won on the main issues in the High Court in 2022, but lost on appeal on one narrow point.

She was ordered to pay Banks £35,000 in damages, issue an apology, and delete certain tweets. She was also hit with a costs order of over £1 million.

The woman who exposed how democracy gets bought had to beg the public for money to stay solvent while doing it.

Seventeen press freedom organisations called the case an attempt to intimidate and silence public interest journalism. The UK government eventually introduced anti-SLAPP legislation. Partly because of what happened to her.

In the UK, you can crowdfund a journalist's survival costs after she exposes the possible corruption of a referendum ..

.. Or you can fund the laws that protect journalists before they get financially destroyed.

We chose the first option.

The FLAMINGO missile has reportedly eliminated Russia's leading missile and aircraft engineers! Ukraine's Armed Forces allegedly carried out a precise strike on a secret headquarters near Moscow.

According to the claim, the Armed Forces of Ukraine conducted one of the most successful operations of the war. A new Ukrainian missile, Flamingo, is said to have penetrated multiple layers of Russian air defenses and struck a heavily protected secret facility near Moscow with high precision.

The strike allegedly hit an underground command bunker where an important closed-door meeting was taking place. The gathering reportedly included senior engineers, designers, and executives from Russia's missile and aerospace industry—people said to be directly responsible for developing and modernizing the weapons Russia uses against Ukraine.

According to preliminary reports, those allegedly targeted included:

Lead developers of the Kalibr cruise missiles;

Engineers involved in the Kinzhal hypersonic missile program;

Managers overseeing modernization programs for the Su-34 fighter-bomber and Su-35 fighter aircraft;

Specialists working on aerial bombs and precision-guided missile systems.

The explosion was reportedly so powerful that secondary detonations and a large fire engulfed the entire facility. According to the claim, Russian emergency services are still struggling to deal with the aftermath. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the loss of highly qualified specialists could have a serious impact on Russia's defense industry.

There are at least two reason they might not want to update us on McConnell’s condition:

-In Kentucky, a special election to replace a Senator will NOT be called if it’s closer than 3 months till the next election.

-That date is August 3rd.

1) If McConnell’s condition is clearly unfit for office, they’d hide that to avoid being forced to submit a resignation letter until after that date.

2) If McConnell has not regained consciousness or has the chance of oxygen induced brain death and is on artificial life support, they would try and

-In Kentucky “brain death” is legally considered death under Kentucky Revised Statute § 446.400

-Any two independent physicians may declare the patient dead for the purposes of the seat being vacated IF the patient is only “alive” due to a ventilator and artificial life support systems.

But, his next of kin (Chao) would need to be involved in the process of treatment and testing and final decisions to end support for that path to be viable…

So is McConnell alive and well? Is he awake and functional? Is he a vegetable?

Either way I think they are trying to make sure we don’t have the answer to that until August 3rd.
