If I'm not mistaken, the cultural principle you're referring to traditionally applies where the husband knowingly accepts responsibility for the child. In other words, if a man is fully aware that a woman is pregnant before marriage and chooses to marry her, or if he is aware of circumstances surrounding the child's conception and nevertheless accepts the child into his household, he is regarded as the child's father in the social and cultural sense. Traditionally, the issue is often one of acknowledgment, acceptance, and responsibility, not necessarily the mere fact that the child was born while the woman was under his roof. If there is evidence from Igbo customary law or tradition extending that principle to deliberate paternity deception, I would be interested in seeing it.
