Judy — I hope you’ve enjoyed being back in Alberta and had a chance to take in our beautiful Rocky Mountains. I remember well your interviews with me in Ottawa during the POEC hearings.

But your description of Forever Canadian raises a rather extraordinary issue.

You describe them as a group “fighting back against Alberta separation” and encouraging the Stay side to vote in force on October 19.

That sounds remarkably like campaigning.

Yet Elections Alberta says Forever Canadian is not “campaigning.” The consequence is significant: the pro-Canada group is not subject to the same donation limits, reporting obligations and financing restrictions imposed on pro-independence groups.

So we now have the Prime Minister and a federal cabinet minister greeting volunteers from an organization actively encouraging one side of Alberta’s referendum — while Elections Alberta treats that organization differently from groups campaigning for the other side.

That double standard should concern everyone, regardless of how they intend to vote.

People can disagree passionately about Alberta’s future. But the referee has to apply the rules evenly.

When one side is tightly regulated and restricted while an organization openly mobilizing the other side is treated as though it is not campaigning, it is unequal treatment and gives one side an advantage.

And that damages something much more important than either side’s campaign: public trust in the fairness and impartiality of Alberta’s electoral process.

And his arguments held up under serious scrutiny.
