8 years ago today, BLACKPINK released “SQUARE UP” with the lead single “DDU-DU DDU-DU.”
It stands as one of the most influential songs in Korean pop history. The song recorded over 1 million unique listeners on MelOn in its first 24 hours and later achieved a Perfect All-Kill (PAK). It set the record for the biggest 24-hour YouTube debut by a Korean act at the time and became the first music video by a K-pop group to reach 1 billion, 1.5 billion, and 2 billion views. “DDU-DU DDU-DU” debuted at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100, while SQUARE UP debuted at #40 on the Billboard 200. The song also reached #78 on the UK Official Singles Chart, a first for a K-pop girl group, and became the first song by a K-pop girl group to earn an RIAA Gold certification.
