Mr. Burnham, you're actually being completely dishonest in blaming privatization for the UK's high energy costs.
The nationalized energy companies were run extremely inefficiently before they were privatized in 1989. Privatization liberated them and enabled huge quantities of new investment. Over the period 1989/90 to 1994/95 the reduction in electricity prices in real terms was 10.0% for residential customers, 11.3 % for small industrial customers, 17.0% for medium industrial customers, 16.5 % for moderately large industrial customers, and 6.7% for extra large industrial customers.
Privatization revealed how grossly inefficient the state electricity companies actually were. Post-privatization reductions in staffing levels were achieved of more than 50% in the case of the generators and over 25% in the case of the distribution companies.
The efficiency improvements enabled huge increases in investment in new power plant and other fixed assets, including new facilities to reduce the environmental impact of emissions.
Of course you want to revert to incompetent union-controlled state ownership, ignoring the real reasons for high energy costs which can be found in your own government's energy policy. But please stop lying.
Angela Rayner has vowed to "defend democracy from fascist dictators."
Is she referring to people who tried to cancel local elections or pass legislation to confiscate lawful donations from opponents?
Because Labour are exhibiting the characteristics she is referring to.
Since I posted this Jaguar Land Rover, UK’s biggest carmaker, is to cut 4,000 jobs.
China Shock 2.0 is not the only factor — soaring costs, especially energy, and Trump’s tariffs are also hitting the company. But Chinese competition is contributing to plunging sales volumes.
JLR is not alone. Volkswagen is in the midst of massive job losses. But Britain might not even have a car industry in a decade — and if it doesn’t it will be down to a combination of politicians lumbering industry with net-zero fuelled energy costs and China Shock 2.0.
When politicians from our Bus-Conductor-in-Chief down talk of reindustrialising Britain, ignore them. They’re pushing policies that do the opposite.
Andy Burn'em blaming Mrs Thatcher for de-nationalising companies in energy, water, oil etc which resulted in foreign ownership is completely disingenuous, and frankly dishonest or just plain ignorant.
What Burn'em WON'T tell you is that Mrs Thatcher ensured that her government retained what were known as 'Golden Shares' in these companies.
These allowed the government to stop foreign takeovers and to have a big say in how they operated.
Guess what though?🤔
The EU objected to these Golden Shares through their 'Free Movement of Capital' clause - Article 63 TFEU.
So John Major started to sell them off accordingly BUT the vast majority were sold off by TONY BLAIR and LABOUR.
So the finger for lack of government control in this area needs to be pointed at Tony Blair and Labour, NOT Margaret Thatcher.
So I am calling out Andy Burn'em as a liar.
Mr Burnham criticises selling UK utilities to foreign states and companies. I agree. I helped Margaret Thatcher put in Golden shares to prevent this. It was the Labour government after 1997 that wrongly cancelled these protections to please the EU.
Not true 👇Uniform is the number one way school leaders improve behaviour across schools.
This policy prevents schools from improving- disadvantaged kids suffer.
Bridget is hurting the kids she says she wants to help.🙄
Here we go again...
Another margin warning for the GB grid for tomorrow. Low wind and hot weather along with reduced imports from Europe leading to tight margins on the GB system
1200 MW shortfall projected from 18:30 to 22:30
Update expected at 9:30am tomorrow
This is now the THIRD day of tight margin warnings this summer (plus 23 June when there should have been one but wasn't)
Before this year there had never been a summer margin warning
So why now? Because our reliance on both wind and imports is growing. Then when it's not windy we're in trouble, particularly if it's also not windy in Europe where most countries we're connected with also rely on wind. They don't have the spare electricity themselves to sell to us
This is only going to get worse. Although the temperatures we're seeing now are unusual, the actual weather isn't
High pressure weather systems with lots of sun but little wind are common both in summer when they cause high temperatures and winter when they bring the coldest temperatures
Clearly we're struggling to manage
Reliance on wind is not energy security
Reliance on imports is not energy security
We need sensible energy policies and to stop gambling on the weather and praying other countries can bail us out

Typical Labour MPs.
Enjoying top-notch private education then pulling up the ladder for bright kids from poorer homes because selective education “bad”.
Or taking kids out of small private schools mid-term because parents can’t manage the VAT.
Spiteful wreckers. @bphillipsonMP
Remember this is not providing more revenue for our economy. No extra teachers in the public sector, (in fact less), with now more kids to teach as children are forced out of their schools, away from their friends, and jobs lost. Private schools like small businesses (also closing at an alarming rate) pay taxes on profit, reduce numbers in public schools (giving more resources for those there) and again … provide jobs, where those employed also pay their taxes not take welfare. Politics of greed & envy are truly vile but also destructive to our economic health over all. But this is also hypocritical as universities selling their wears to more foreign students than British these days do not pay vat!
In other countries, governments give tax breaks to private schools. They love it when parents choose not to ask the state to bear the full cost of their children's education, and try to be helpful.
In Britain, uniquely, economics and education are subordinated to spite.
BBC just stated the heatwave is “unequivocally because of human induced climate change.” BBC must now provide proof - not consensus, actual
proof - of this ridiculous claim. If they can’t, they’ve broken their impartiality charter again
I do not know of any other country whose ruling elites are so willing to trash that country’s history and traditions, or seem so intent on diluting its unique national character and turning it into some sort of outpost of the UN. It’s relentless.
The absence of a tax is not a tax break.
The United Kingdom includes all educational institutions large and small as ‘eligible bodies’ to ensure their educational enterprise is not hindered or compromised by VAT.
UNTIL NOW - when a narrow cohort has been excluded for the purpose of tax gouging.
It is a policy of bias, discrimination and prejudice without pedagogical principle and it harms many children.
No Secretary of State for Education should set out to deliberately harm children. It is morally reprehensible.
Imagine thinking being spiteful (and cruelly forcing kids out of school and away from their friends halfway through the school year) is something to be proud of. What a nasty, vindictive individual. https://t.co/2clT59pAWB
