Wilhelm Kempff plays Beethoven: Piano Sonatas No.14 "Moonlight". Filmed at the ORTF, Paris, France, 19 January 1970.
Moonlight Sonata (officially Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27 No. 2) is one of Ludwig van Beethoven's most celebrated and beloved masterpieces, composed in 1801.
When Beethoven composed the Moonlight Sonata, he was in the early stages of the hearing loss that would eventually leave him completely deaf. At around thirty or thirty-one years of age, he had already become painfully aware that his hearing was steadily deteriorating, a realisation that plunged him into profound despair. Only a year later, in 1802, he wrote the celebrated Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he confessed that he had contemplated suicide, yet ultimately resolved to continue living for the sake of his art.
A Symbol of Redemption and Triumph over Adversity
The three-movement structure of the Moonlight Sonata has often been interpreted by musicians and scholars within the classical tradition as the spiritual journey of a soul passing through adversity.
First Movement – Adagio sostenuto
A profound meditation upon fate, expressing deep sorrow with remarkable restraint, dignity and clarity of mind. It was composed during the period in which Beethoven was confronting the relentless progression of his hearing loss.
Second Movement – Allegretto
A moment of gentle consolation and luminous serenity, famously described by Franz Liszt as "a flower between two abysses."
Third Movement – Presto agitato
A tempest of indomitable will. Far from depicting surrender or aimless rebellion, it embodies the gathering of immense inner strength to overcome adversity, affirming the power of human resolve, hope, and moral character.
The transformation from the stillness of the opening movement to the overwhelming storm of the finale demonstrates one of the enduring ideals of the classical tradition: true art does not evade suffering, but transforms it into spiritual elevation and enlightenment, rather than leading humanity towards despair or moral decline.
It is through this understanding that many distinguished interpreters of the classical tradition, notably András Schiff and Wilhelm Kempff, have approached the sonata with exceptional restraint and unwavering fidelity to Beethoven's original conception. As a result, the piano speaks with a purity, transparency and nobility that allow the music itself to shine without theatrical exaggeration.
For many lovers of classical music, preserving and experiencing the Moonlight Sonata in a manner faithful to Beethoven's intentions is not merely an act of safeguarding one of the greatest masterpieces of Western music. It is also a means of preserving a beacon of beauty, moral virtue, and spiritual values bestowed upon humanity by the Divine through the extraordinary genius of Beethoven.

*The Advisor has contractually agreed to keep the net expenses of IWMI from exceeding 0.68% of the Fund's average daily net assets through September 30, 2026 and the net expenses of NIHI from exceeding 0.68% of the Fund's average daily net assets through September 10, 2026 subject to approval of the agreement by the Board. Without the fee waiver IWMI’s expenses would be 0.76% and NIHI’s expenses would be 0.75%. BTCI’s total annual fund operating expenses are 0.99%.
**30-day SEC Yield is calculation based on a formula mandated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that calculates a fund's hypothetical annualized income, as a percentage of its assets. A security's income, for the purposes of this calculation, is based on the current market yield to maturity (in the case of bonds) or projected dividend yield (for stocks) of the fund's holdings over a trailing 30-day period. This hypothetical income will differ (at times, significantly) from the fund's actual experience; as a result, income distributions from the fund may be higher or lower than implied by the SEC yield. It is important to note that 30-Day SEC Yield does not include income received from option selling. The data reflects the most recent month-end (5/31/2026). The Unsubsidized 30-day SEC Yield represents what a fund’s 30-day SEC yield would be had no fee waiver been in place over the reporting period. IWMI = 0.46% and NIHI = 2.64%.
Distribution Rate: The annualized rate an investor would receive if the Fund’s most recent distribution remained constant. It reflects a single distribution, not the Fund’s total return, and is calculated by annualizing the most recent distribution (multiplying by 12) and dividing by the Fund’s most recent ex-date NAV.
