I don't know, mate. The way big transfers usually work is that agents & intermediaries from all sides are in touch with each other constantly. You can be sure Chelsea knew exactly where things were each step of the way in this transfer. If Inter had moved faster, Chelsea would've have swooped in earlier too. Deals don't close the moment the offer & ask match. The clubs inform the agents. The agents & intermediaries talk inbetween. If Alonso really wanted Palestra, which seems like it at the moment, then Chelsea would have moved whenever Inter were close to the deal, today or a week earlier.

We all know that Inter cannot compete with Chelsea if it came to a bidding war. So Chelsea just let Inter negotiate the best price & then moved in - possibly to make sure Atalanta don't put in an exorbitant 'EPL' premium. This wouldn't be the first time a club has used that strategy.

Inter's only hope was that Palestra wanted Inter. If Palestra had put his foot down, Inter would have closed the deal. But it looks like that was not the case. So I really cannot blame the Inter management here. This was Palestra's choice.

@fcimshano Inter has nothing to do with this. Obviously Atalanta stalled the deal to wait for a better deal from a non-Italian club. They tried to do the same with Lookman and failed but succeeded in this one.

@GenaudelloSport A i ne treba nam sa takvim stavom, Lautaro je mogao otići 100 puta i Barella a nisu. I Hakan je mogao prošlo ljeto pa nije. Za Bastonija je suvišno govoriti. Ovo znači da čak i da je došao i bio odličan pa nam iduće sezone došao Siti sa boljom ponudom on bi tražio transfer
