Chios sells something that grows nowhere else on Earth.

The mastic tree weeps an edible resin only here, on the south of this one island, and the wealth was serious enough that the Genoese who ran Chios from 1346 built the mastic villages as fortresses to guard it. Pyrgi is still carved head to toe in black-and-white geometric xysta. Mesta turns its back to the sea, its houses opening inward, built for the centuries when pirates were the daily threat. It is also one of the great shipowning islands of Greece, with the family fortunes and the University of the Aegean's shipping school to match. Chios is the one island here that almost no foreigner I know has actually visited. That is usually a buy signal.
