ready for primer -> then bondo. thanks to all who chimed in, i picked up some aerosol epoxy primer from o'reilly's. i'm pretty sure such a thing did not exist when i started doing body work, but paint tech has evolved. now even poors like can me have access to it.
@captainpisslord@Violator_Name i stopped at a bar in dearborn once to try and find some food when i was helping someone buy a car nearby. went inside and unknowingly ordered the shittiest nachos i've ever had, cheese wasn't even melted just a bunch of slightly stale, unmixed condiments thrown into a box
since bondo is porous and can absorb moisture, i've been wanting to try epoxy primer underneath bondo for rust protection, but it's expensive as hell... it's also hard to imagine the filler gripping as much as it would to bare metal. maybe i'll just stick to the old way for now.
@Muddybon good to know! if that's the case i think i'll have to give it a try. my path of thinking is, if the metal underneath is completely sealed with epoxy on both sides there's no way it can ever rust.
theoretically i'll have fluid film over clearcoat over paint on both sides so the metal shouldn't ever be exposed to oxygen at all but realistically i know no painted surface on planet earth can withstand michigan dirt roads without chipping so i'm torn...

@Empty_America hot climates have a direct correlation with low IQ, low life expectancy, and high murder rates. if you wanna live in an objectively inferior climate with objectively inferior people that's up to you, though.
i've got everything sanded down ready for bondo. judging from all the filler on the quarter, this isn't the first time it's been bodyworked - lets hurry up and get a skim coat of bondo over these welds before everything spot rusts.
@muhasaba_needer sadly no, looks like just a solid cap. but still such a nice and simple design compared those "midwest can" abominations, which is all i've seen for sale as far back as i can remember.
something amazing spawned at a nearby garage sale. an ancient bottle jack, the perfect patina'd jerry can for mad max LARPing purposes and a speed wrench (something i've wanted for years after watching youtube videos of pakastanis rebuild shitheaps on the side of the road)
now that the final pieces of the puzzle have been added, i can finally see what it looks like in it's full form. what an amazing feeling. when i started this project, i wasn't sure if it would even be possible, and had only seen chinese youtubers tackle repairs of this level.
more metalwork on the beloved civic... i used some metal of the same thickness and relatively the same curvature off of the original quarter panel to make things easier.
