How Ghana’s Gold Board Is Strengthening the Cedi
First, how currency works: A currency rises when demand increases like investors or buyers of Ghana’s goods exchanging dollars for cedis. It falls when confidence drops, too much money is printed (Quantity Theory of Money), or imports surge, forcing Ghanaians to buy dollars. It’s all about supply, demand, and trust.
Previously, much of Ghana’s artisanal gold was smuggled or sold untracked, costing the country over $2 billion annually in lost forex. Worse, gold was exported without investors converting dollars to cedis.
Now, with the Gold Board as sole buyer, assayer, and exporter, the system is controlled. Here’s how:
1.About 80% of artisanal gold is bought locally in cedis investors must convert dollars first (capital inflow effect).
2.This boosts cedi demand and strengthens its value (asset market approach).
3.Reduced smuggling increases official export earnings, improving the current account.
4.More foreign exchange builds reserves, curbs inflation, and supports the currency (Mundell-Fleming model).
In short, the Gold Board turns Ghana’s gold into a structured forex source boosting cedi demand and restoring confidence through better control, revenue, and reserves
GHACEM cement price drops from GHS 120 to GHS 82 due to the cedi's appreciation against the dollar. Other similar items are expected to see significant price reductions.
