As we age, most of us prefer to live at home and receive medical care in our community rather than in a nursing facility.
But Medicaid laws make home and community-based care hard to access.

Social Security benefits lift more than 22 million people above the poverty line, including 1 million children. Still, large numbers of seniors have modest incomes — 1 in 3 have incomes below twice the poverty line.
Some key facts about Social Security’s critical impact:
#SocialSecurity is the largest source of income for most retirees. For 4 in 10 retirees, Social Security provides at least HALF of their income, and for 1 in 7 it provides at least 90%.
Justice Sotomayor, dissenting: "Although the consequences of today's decision might be most pressing for the LGBT community, the decision's logic cannot be limited to discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The decision threatens to balkanize the market and to allow the exclusion of other groups from many services. A website designer could equally refuse to create a wedding website for an interracial couple, for example. How quickly we forget that opposition to interracial marriage was often because 'Almighty God
... did not intend for the races to mix.'"
Let's be clear: This decision, coming on the last day of Pride, will enable discrimination for LGBTQ+ couples and all protected classes across the country. It's a hateful step backwards.
"Today is a sad day in American constitutional law and in the lives of LGBT people. The Supreme Court...declares that a particular kind of business, though open to the public, has a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class."

SSI is a vital lifeline for poor seniors and people with disabilities. But it bans recipients from saving more than *$2000*.
Eliminating this rule would reduce paperwork, encourage resilience, simplify administration—and it wouldn’t even cost much to do it
Our estimates indicate that a $1 increase in Medicaid HCBS spending equates to an increase of $0.74 in overall LTSS spending. Put differently, these results suggest that each additional Medicaid dollar spent on HCBS is offset by a $0.26 reduction in nursing home spending. 7/

Is there a “woodwork effect” when Medicaid spends more on home- & community-based services (HCBS)?

Don't fall for Big Pharma's smoke and mirrors game. Listen to the experts: “What Merck argues is ‘coercion’ is actually the establishment of a freer, more rational marketplace' that will address a crucial root cause of high drug prices."
1 in 5 older adults already can’t afford these basic needs. Now imagine if funding for housing & food was slashed by 22% & red tape prevented healthcare access. Congress must put people first & raise the debt limit w/out cutting antipoverty programs. #carenotcuts#ProtectMedicaid
