@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala Yes, it is illegal to vote without being registered, so I think it's only natural your registration should be checked at the polling place
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala I'm saying that instituting a federal ID mandate for elections will do absolutely nothing because in the states where fraud is already a problem, they can just not enforce it. So it's an unconstitutional burden on everyone else for zero gain. The solution needs to be different.
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala If this is the case, then as is with most discussions about ID laws, it comes down to enforcement again. Even if we did pass stricter ID laws, these states could simply not enforce them. The answer isn't more laws, when even the current ones aren't being handled right
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala The idea that having a car in itself can be interpreted as a tool for evading the law is extremely dangerous precedent to set, which is why the government doesn't do so. It's up to the fed to enforce their own immigration laws, but not in ways that will cascade to affect citizens
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala The SCOTUS has ruled on a federal level, which is why it is up to the states to pass their own local laws regarding the matter. It's entirely reasonable to take issue with particular states, their local laws, and the enforcement thereof. But it's in their hands in the end
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala For clarity, because this is in the context of elections, of the 19 states that offer "licenses" to illegal immigrants, 12 offer non REAL-ID licenses, which can't be used as federal identification, and the other 7 don't offer licenses at all, rather "driver privilege cards"
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala It is a protected right to have free travel within and between states. As we are a federal republic, it has been left to the states themselves to determine individually whether that includes or doesn't include the right to drive a car. Evidently, some states have concluded so.
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala The legal penalty for illegal immigration is deportation, and possibly a fine and jail time depending on the specific circumstances. This should be enforced, but nothing more. We are not to penalize people by taking away extra rights unrelated to the circumstances of their crime
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala The US has averaged 350,000 repatriatiins yearly for over a decade, peaking in 2023 with over a million in one year under Biden (there were a lot extra due to COVID laws). That's more than most other countries combined. We're doing alright, it's just a never-ending battle.
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala All countries have immigration laws. Deportation is not the same as exile. We don't say that because someone is illegally in the country, they immediately lose all rights. Otherwise it would be legal to hunt and kill them. We penalize them according to proper procedures
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala This is a bad thing and should not be tolerated in a country that prides itself on free and fair elections. It also has nothing to do with ID laws and would not have been prevented by ID laws, unfortunately
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala People who commit perjury should be taken to court, and if found guilty, should be penalized accordingly. People who have not committed perjury should not be forced to submit to the weight of further government intervention as a form of collective punishment
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala Exile is the practice that when someone violates a law, they lose all their legal protections and human rights. Civilized societies haven't used that in a long time. We recognize that for particular crimes there are particular punishments, not a blanket loss of all rights forever
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala For those concerned about stuff like illegal voting and registration, the solution is more enforcement of the laws we have, not the creation of more legal bloat that criminals will simply ignore either way
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala All states require you to at least declare that you're a citizen in order to register, which means if you are a non-citizen you have committed perjury. Restrictions on those of us doing it legally won't prevent people already breaking the law from doing so further
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala The issue isn't inherently with IDs in general (not to mention even if you did pass an ID mandate, bad actors could simply forge theirs), the issue is in charging for them. If the ID in question was a social security card, something you get for free, it would not be a poll tax
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala Yes, it is illegal to vote without being registered, so I think it's only natural your registration should be checked at the polling place
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala I don't see why illegal immigrants shouldn't be allowed to drive. You can't register to vote in the first place without proof of citizenship so just presenting a driver's license at the poll without any further documentation won't let you vote illegally.
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala It doesn't matter if there's only one singular person in the entire country voting without an ID. The fed does not get the ability to violate our constitutional protections. That's it. 0.1%, 100%, doesn't matter. Rights are rights.
@Thickjimmy83687@JohnthesheepNAT@SpaceKoala I want you to step back and think about what you're arguing for, in your eagerness to get me on a gotcha. You are now saying that the federal government should have the ability to freely violate the constitution as long as the victims are a small enough portion of the citizenry
