the cult of maximum efficiency is one of the worst things to happen to society. I can’t defend studying Latin or reading for pleasure or spending an hour at the park with my niece in a way that will satisfy shareholders. but they’re worth doing because they’re beautiful and good.
people who say “why do we need [fine arts, humanities degrees, mid-budget films] when they don’t make a ton of money?” are insufferable. why do we need chrysanthemums? why do we need bonfires or baleen whales or the color blue? we just do. we just do.
Don't mind me, just over here getting emotional in this Panera reading/watching students' final projects. Lots of gratitude for students' vulnerability & creativity, for landing in the place where I have and for getting to do this work. May it continue.
@RachelMesch @chronicle THIS part: "J published nine books and probably prevented as many from being written." I think a lot about the voices & knowledge lost because of people's actions like those you describe here. Thank you for writing it and thank you for the care you take with your students now.
USian post-election discourse about "I should just move to France!" [dramatic back of hand to forehead] based on a general foundation of Europe as Disney World, not a real place, politics don't exist there, I could go on...

Le RN prévoit de voter la motion de censure déposée par la gauche, sonnant le glas du gouvernement Barnier. Six mois après la dissolution, la position du Président n’a jamais été aussi fragile.

@LizzyAttree @AfricainWords@PenguinClassics Didn't know this was getting re-published in English! Thank you so much for getting more attention to this book and the complicated connections with Sarr's truly stunning novel.
Dahomey (2024): Mati Diop’s transcendent documentary about the return of artefacts to Benin, narrated by the artefacts themselves. A stunning, dreamlike film. Diop is one of the best filmmakers currently working. This is on general release today and I can’t recommend it enough
