In a sport with (for now) no salary cap there’s no excuse for a team in one of the biggest and wealthiest markets in America to be uncompetitive, to say nothing of the analytical talent in SF that could go to development/scouting.
Hezekiah Masses did not want to play defense.
He was a wide receiver at Deerfield Beach High School in Florida, and before his senior year his coach asked him to switch to cornerback. Masses pushed back.
"Man, I don't know about that. I like scoring touchdowns, man."
Coach Jevon Glenn kept it simple. "Zeke, you're long, lengthy. You should switch to corner."
Masses is a shade over six feet with a wingspan of nearly six five.
He gave in that summer, and it took about a week.
"Ever since that summer, man, I was just playing corner and I loved it. I just fell in love with it."
Nobody came running. He was a two star recruit, and he went to Florida International.
Three seasons there. Two interceptions total.
So he transferred to California for 2025, and the kid nobody wanted led the entire country in passes defended with 18. He added five interceptions and returned them 91 yards. First team All ACC.
Then came the 2026 draft, and the Las Vegas Raiders had the first pick in it. They used it on quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
They took Masses 174 picks later. Fifth round, 175th overall.
Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins he barely played. One pass knocked down. That was it.
Then Darien Porter got hurt.
Masses made his first NFL start in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers. He intercepted Justin Herbert twice. Six passes were thrown his way all day and he allowed two catches for 16 yards. Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey lined up across from him for 11 snaps and caught nothing.
He became the seventh rookie in Raiders history with two interceptions in a game, and the first since Henry Williams in 1979.
He won AFC Defensive Player of the Week and NFL Rookie of the Week. The last Raiders rookie to win that defensive award was Maxx Crosby in 2019.
Here is what he said about the night before his first start.
"It was definitely a big moment. I couldn't even sleep last night, man, I was like, 'I can't let my team down.'"
And here is what he said about where he sits on the roster.
"I don't really look at depth charts. It's just, whenever I have the opportunity, I'm just trying to make plays."
Today in New Orleans he got another one. The Las Vegas Raiders beat the New Orleans Saints 35-27.
Three interceptions in three NFL games. That is tied for the most in the league.
Two in three years at Florida International. Three in three weeks in the NFL.
The rest of it is worth saying out loud. This franchise went 3-14 last season, the worst record in football. They hired Klint Kubiak in February, straight out of Seattle where he ran the Seattle Seahawks offense.
Now they are 3-0, and the reason people keep bringing up is a fifth round corner who spent most of high school running routes.
Three games is three games. Nobody is hanging a banner in September.
But a kid who begged to stay on offense now leads the NFL in taking the football away from people.
@JFreshHockey Panthers at 3 for the Sharks is definitely a sign of newgens being over-represented. Anaheim, Vancouver, Detroit, St. Louis, and even fucking Utah are all better answers for teams to hate than performative anti-Panthers larp
Takeaways from Cal’s win
1. Play in the trenches improved over last week but still needs to be better
2. Cal is still DBU
3. Syracuse tried to gift us this game with penalties and we nearly gave it right back the same way. 2 huge missed field goals saved us
4. Lopa is the truth
“We will always stand with the underdog” is an idiotic child’s approach to international affairs.
The Taliban were the underdogs. Al-Qaeda were the underdogs. ISIS were the underdogs. The IRA, ETA, just about every terrorist group were underdogs. What a moronic thing to say.
@goldmanbear FWIW I was in the student section next to a visiting friend from UCLA who said the chant really got under his skin bc it was just that obnoxious
We don’t have any words and we know you don’t want to hear them.
We understand your anger, your frustration, your sadness. Everything you’re feeling – we get it.
This isn’t the ending we imagined, and certainly not the one we wanted. Thank you for being there the entire way.
