The prophet Isaiah compared the Kingdom of God to a sprout, an image not of power or destruction, but of birth and renewal. The Church experienced this with the Second Vatican Council, which concluded exactly sixty years ago. We renew that experience when we journey toward the Kingdom of God, together with all those who eagerly welcome and serve it.

Holiness must blossom precisely where decisions are made that affect the lives of thousands of families. The world needs entrepreneurs and leaders who, out of love for God and neighbor, work for an economy that serves the common good. It is possible to be both an entrepreneur and a saint—economic efficiency and fidelity to the Gospel are not mutually exclusive—and charity can penetrate even industrial and financial structures.

In a world where arrogance and violence seem to prevail over charity, we are called to bear witness that life triumphs over death, that love conquers hatred, that forgiveness overcomes revenge, and that mercy and grace overcome sin.
