Removing the clear screen protector from the iPhone, but leaving the protective case intact, solved the black screen hanging problem.

Apple Care had me back up and restore. If that doesn't resolve issue it will go to Repair. They'll give me a new iPhone if still unresolved.

Actually, resetting the iPhone does little to help the locked / black screen issue. Removing the protective case to test.

iPhone screen staying black in spite of being on and unlocked may be due to protective case that covers proximity sensor. Resetting helps.
