In more bad news for Chicken lovers, here is what has been found by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism

Venky’s, a major poultry producer in India, found marketing antibiotics for growth promotion and preventative use on farms.

The company sells products containing vital antibiotics classified by WHO as crucial for human health, contributing to drug-resistant infections.

Controversial Practices:
- Antibiotics used for growth promotion & preventative used are banned in EU & US due to their impact on antibiotic effectiveness in humans.
- Previous use of colistin as a growth promoter led to government ban after criticism.

Product Listings:
- Venky’s markets medicated poultry feeds containing antibiotics like tylosin and amoxicillin for growth promotion.
- Products like Tylomix and Amo-premix listed on their website contain antibiotics vital for human medicine.

Concerns Raised:
- Unmonitored antibiotic use in poultry farming termed “a recipe for disaster” by experts.
- Overuse of antibiotics contributing to the spread of drug-resistant foodborne diseases globally.

Global Impact of Antimicrobial Resistance:
- Landmark study in 2019 estimated over 1.27 million deaths due to AMR-related infections, surpassing HIV/AIDS and malaria deaths.
- Antimicrobial-resistant infections implicated in nearly 5 million deaths globally.

- Urgent need to address unregulated antibiotic use in poultry farming to preserve antibiotic effectiveness and minimize antimicrobial resistance risks.
