Even today computers estimate the value of something simple like "1.0", double precision has it more looking like "1.000000000001" or "0.999999999999".
Anyone that reads just the first chapters of Mike Abrash's Graphics Black Book knows how we seldom find best (or even good) solutions for some problems and everything is basically a bunch of compromises or coarse approximations or straight out lies that look "acceptable."
