I really hope I am wrong, because I cannot even emotionally process losing this election given the alternative. And I’m doing everything I can for that not to happen.

But if I’m being honest, and I always try my best to be, in the back of my head I fear the fact that Trump has played so fast and loose with pro-lifers is gonna be the “Romney didn’t even eat the chicken sandwich” of this election cycle.

No other issue has driven out the GOP base more for 50 years now. And my biggest fear is never saying the following will cost us the 2-3 points of evangelical and trad Catholic turnout (much of that located in the crucial suburbs) that could’ve won us this thing:

“I told you I was going to appoint the justices that overturned Roe, and I did. Now every state gets to decide. In my home state of Florida, Democrats have put an abortion up till birth bill on the ballot, the kind of vile stuff Kamala and Walz support, which is also something 80% of Americans don’t agree with. Which is why in my home state I’ll be voting against such a gruesome bill. No one with a conscience is for no restrictions whatsoever. Everyone should vote their conscience on this issue now. I am voting mine.”

Trump Campaign Manager Chris LaCivita was on the 2004 Bush campaign, when moral values was the #2 issue in the exit polls. Also not coincidentally was the last time Republicans won the presidential popular vote. So he has to know how much max turnout of believers makes the difference. It would be political malpractice to leave 2-3 points of your base at home for not making a statement 80% of Americans would agree with. It would also be a generational political mistake we may never recover from.

But that is my biggest fear, even more than their ballot harvesting scheme. Because this is entirely within our control and an unforced error.

There is still time to correct it.
