Perunchilambu is a serene, picturesque village locality situated in the Kalkulam area of the Kanyakumari district. It is widely celebrated as a peaceful nature getaway, primarily known for the Perunchilambu Stream Check Dam Falls nestled within the lush greenery of Velimalai.
I came to know about this fascinating temple called Nethrapatheeswarar Temple in Sembiyankalari village, tucked between Orathur and Megalathur in Thanjavur district. It’s known as the “Eye Healing Temple”, people say Lord Shiva here cures vision problems.
The Moondram Pirai Ritual
Every month on the moondram pirai, the third day after Amavasya, special poojas are held at twilight. This is the time devotees with vision issues come to seek Shiva’s grace.
The main ritual is the abhishekam with Dasavani Thailam, a medicinal oil made from 10 ingredients:
Neeli Bringadi
Ponnanganni
Karisalankanni
Henna
Hibiscus
Coconut oil
Sesame oil
Illuppai oil
Castor oil
Neem oil
Moondram Pirai Darshan
In the evening, devotees gather behind the sanctum and look up for the thin crescent moon. It usually appears between 6:30 PM and 7:10 PM on the third day after new moon. Only after seeing the moon, Deeparadhana is offered for Nethrapatheeswarar. If clouds hide the moon, the pooja still goes on based on the prescribed time.
Figs are offered as naivedyam. After the pooja, the Dasavani thailam used for abhishekam is given as prasadam. Devotees apply it on their crown and eyelids, believing it cools the eyes, sharpens vision, and eases eye ailments.
Because of this, many people struggling with eye problems attend the moondram pirai pooja regularly and use the oil as a sacred remedy.
Sembiyankalari sits just south of the ancient Kallanai Dam. It was once historically significant, with parts of Chola administration run from here. The temple, along with Kamakshi Amman’s shrine, was built by Sembiyan Mahadevi, mother of Rajaraja Chola I.
Lord Nethrapatheeswarar is in lingam form facing east. Kamakshi Amman has a separate shrine facing south.
At the entrance is Nandi and Vinayaka stands to the right of the sanctum, and Shiva Subramanya to the left. In the outer corridor you’ll find Narthana Vinayakar, Dakshinamurthy, Annamalaiyar, Brahma, and Rudra Durga. Chandikeswarar has his own shrine. The temple’s sthala vriksham is the Vilva tree, with Naga idols placed beneath it.
