Take a second look before popping that pill for your flu. Experts warn that overdosing on common medicines like paracetamol can lead to fatal liver damage, and cases are rising as flu season sets in.
According to standard dosing guidelines, adults should not exceed 1,000 mg (1g) of paracetamol per single dose, or 4,000 mg (4g) within 24 hours, with a gap of at least 6 hours between doses.
Doctors caution that early warning signs, including fatigue, nausea and stomach pain, closely mimic a common stomach bug, often delaying diagnosis. Later signs include yellowing of the eyes or skin, and confusion. Medical experts advise that anyone who suspects they've exceeded the recommended dose should seek immediate medical attention, even if no symptoms are present.
Always read labels and consult a doctor before popping a pill.
