@mirandakagarter@RupertMyers@British_Airways Not quite correct. Nothing forcing anyone else to get off, but, if during the process of disembarking and offloading baggage ATC release the flight and it can’t immediately push/depart you’ll lose the ATC slot and go to the back of the queue with maybe another 3 to 4 hours

Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister from 1937 to 1940, is possibly best known today for his ill-fated speech after his meeting with Hitler in 1938 where he declared that war with Germany had been averted. Generally he is regarded as a weak and militarily inept appeaser of the Nazis, as depicted in recent films like Darkest Hour.
But, how much of this is actually true ? (or fair)
A few "points of note":
1) From about 1922 to 1934, British defence spending as a proportion of GDP was utterly static. The Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1924-1929, the middle period of this abject failure to spend on defence, was in fact, one Winston Churchill, (Chamberlain took over from 1931>1937).
2) Chamberlain, carefully (and correctly) proposed that with the state of the economy being totally inadequate to prepare Britain for war with Germany AND the far east (i.e Japan), it was necessary to prioritise. He chose to pour what little resources he had into the RAF and Navy, and not into the army. He judged that these two services would be most critical in a future war, from the perspective of industrial and scientific investment. This had the unfortunate effect of putting the immediate blame for the early failures (which were most glaringly of the army) on his shoulders. Few are interested that the fact the RAF was out-producing the Luftwaffe at the time and that the Navy was the most powerful in the world were both definitely attributable to Chamberlain.
Few (if any) had imagined that France`s army would fall so easily to the Germans.
3) In June 1934 Chamberlain`s review of British defence needs was:
"The return of the country <Britain> to normal financial conditions was still so beset with difficulty that it was impossible to afford all that had been recommended, and Ministers must therefore decide on priorities. Britain`s initial efforts in rearmament should be devoted to measures design for the defence of these islands...the chief danger from Germany was from the air. The best defence for this purpose was a powerful air force based upon this country and as a second and long term line of defence an Army capable of helping to protect the low countries and thus provide defence in depth."*
(*DC meeting 32, 120. 50th meeting)
4) In 1934 Chamberlain rejected recommendations that another ten home defence RAF squadrons be formed, he proposed that savings be made by reducing fleet and reserve aircraft, enabling money to be found to increase home defence RAF squadrons not by another 10, but by an extra 38 squadrons.
He certainly made severe mistakes, and can and should be criticized, but his current status as a mere "appeaser" and the man MOST responsible for the inadequate preparation of Britain for war is almost criminally incorrect.
@_jtalbo @iainile@BBCRosAtkins Thanks I’ll try and find more then. On my phone it was hard to read the sources but thought I saw the Guardian article re 6500 workers quoted. Still seems high as I’d seen union report somewhere that said about 34 deaths. Will look it up.
@rachelannmorris@thetimes Indeed. British media show once again they have no real idea. Instead of actual journalism they are recugitating incorrect and false tropes to grab headlines. Expected better from @thetimes
@gooseflight@iainile@BBCRosAtkins The fatality of any construction worker anywhere due to their work or employment is unacceptable. That data does not represent just construction workers or those that died due to work or employment. It’s created an incorrect and misleading view not helping genuine improvements
@TheTweetingPie @iainile@BBCRosAtkins Because I read the original piece of work and not just the reported headline. And these are not just people who work on construction. And they are not all young. Qatar absolutely has work to do and needs to make improvements. Misleading narrative does not help that’s all.
@iainile@BBCRosAtkins I know three of those statistics. Their deaths were sad but nothing to do with abuse or work related. Car crash, cancer and heart attack.
@iainile@BBCRosAtkins That’s a gross misrepresentation. You are not comparing the same thing. The others are direct deaths involved. Qatar figure is the number of foreign workers living and working in Qatar who have died there for ANY reason . They’re are 2.75 million foreign workers. 90% of pop.
@finalthrows@zarahsultana I’ll have to read up on stale cash tax. But if it means like it sounds then quite like the idea of that. Wealth that is invested as capital is not an issue for me. But excessive cash doing nothing but denied to others is the greatest sin (except savings and contingency cash)
@VisctFishpond @Valeman_ @DanLeMac @SimmonsSimond@DistopianGirl@EmmaKennedy@skatinggirl1 But you’re right the whole subject is really about NIC. Have no issue if NIC be calculated on all earnings not just PAYE? I pay voluntary NIC anyway and I assume that will go up.
@VisctFishpond @Valeman_ @DanLeMac @SimmonsSimond@DistopianGirl@EmmaKennedy@skatinggirl1 I never said I was for or against the principle. I simply offered some information / insight around the potential profits or cost of renting to a post that was discussing it. Someone raised valid point that we get profit on the capital gains so I pointed out that gets taxed.
@DanLeMac @SimmonsSimond@DistopianGirl@EmmaKennedy@skatinggirl1 Indeed. I have invested in my education, worked hard, made some good choices, made some sacrifices. Also aware I’ve had good fortune, got lucky along the way. I do pay NIC just not through employment or rental income.I assume my contributions will go which is fine.
