When I learned of the annular eclipse coming across Utah a few months ago my mind immediately began racing with visions of how I wanted to portray it. Moonscape Overlook kept flashing before my eyes as a moment in time began to show itself.

Originally I wanted this to be moody and sinister, with an apocalyptic undertone as if the Earth was torched and there was a lone survivor overlooking the barren land. I find it ironic that this shot took on a life of its on and came out with a mood of loneliness, but hope amongst a land of surrealistic features.

If you zoom in closely at the bottom right side of the sun, you’ll see a sliver of light that is broken up. This happens to be known as Baily’s Beads, a feature of eclipses where the moon’s rugged landscape allows beads of sunlight to slip by the valleys, craters and mountains.

Special thank you to Jagoda for coming out, braving her fear of heights (y’all know I didn’t get on that thing) and experiencing the eclipse with not only myself, but other friends who we happened to cross paths with that weekend.

Hope you all enjoy this and let me know what you think (both good and bad critiques are encouraged) as I never use photoshop nor do composite work. 😅
