As a former bodybuilder who started out believing that every set needed to be taken to failure—and often beyond—this is a topic on which my views have gradually evolved. Here is yet another study indicating that stopping short of failure (1–3 RIR) can produce similar increases in muscle size and strength as going all-out when performing multiple sets. These findings are consistent with recent meta-analyses on the topic and suggest that lifters can achieve comparable gains while reducing discomfort by stopping a couple of reps shy of failure.
We still can't rule out the possibility that strategically taking some sets to failure may provide a modest benefit for adaptation. However, the emerging body of research suggests that, if such a benefit exists, it is likely to be relatively small and of questionable benefit to the vast majority of the gen pop 💪

A recent comment in the European Journal of Applied Physiology challenges the notion that lactate accumulation drives the V̇O slow component, suggesting instead that a decline in glycolytic rate plays a key role during intense exercise.
