Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Ramayana: Part 1’ is a sturdy, respectful retelling of the epic

Yash appears first as Ravana, who becomes the ruler of all three worlds. To conquer him, Lord Vishnu takes the avatar of Rama, played by Ranbir Kapoor. Sai Pallavi plays Sita. The film’s biggest challenge is not how to show never-before visual effects, which are not bad. The challenge is really how to make us stay invested in a story we have heard over and over, especially when you have to tell this story in a fast-forward mode that offers very little room for development. The result is solid, but you wish it had been more. You wish it had been spectacular. But Yash and Ranbir are very good. The final portions really work, and Part 2 seems promising.

#MovieReview #Ramayana A Grand Spectacle That’s Made For Big Screen Experience

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ramayana promised some never seen before visuals at an unheard of budget, and it delivers that (and more) in a big way. After all, the story and characters are known to every Indian and hence to bring audiences to theatres, it all boiled down to the visual appeal. Moreover there were huge claims as well due to 4000 crores budget and international crew coming into picture. From that perspective, the film does deliver really well as you are amazed by sheer scale and intricacy with which the visuals (and audio) have been put together.

The emotions that work are (ironically) the ones associated with Ravana. Right from the onset his acts are established and you get to know the story behind the villain. You are hooked. Ditto for the portions immediately after the interval where a major fight sequence is well justified too. Then the same holds true for the series of events leading to the climax. It won’t be wrong to say that #Yash owns the scene each time around and elevates the narrative whenever it slips or threatens to stagnate.

That’s why #RanbirKapoor scenes with #ArunGovil, and later with #SaiPallavi, are just about okay. You don’t feel any divinity or love there, and they just about pass muster. In fact for the first half of the film Ranbir is good, not extraordinary, and it’s primarily in the second half - when a lot of action unfolds - does he start coming across as more heroic. Sai is just about decent and perhaps another choice of mainstream and popular actress would have helped. #RaviDubey is the surprise package of the film. He steals the scene at times and also brings in humour. His persona and dialogue delivery is perfect too. #RakulPreetSingh is very good. She is every bit the seductress and the best part is that she does it all with just her face. Arun Govil is good, and so is #Shobhana. #AnupamKher is superb as the voice of Jatayu and even the character is designed very heroic and massy.

Action sequences are mindblowing, and the VFX/CGI that compliments these are absolutely fantastic and belong to never-seen-before variety from Indian cinema. The visuals are out of the world (literally) and you are just engrossed into what plays on screen. BGM is very good, though a bit inconsistent in between when you feel that certain scenes would have been elevated even better. Sets are very good though at places you do know that it’s green screen coming into play. Costumes go very well with the film’s era and setting.

Overall, Ramayana by #NitishTiwari and #NamitMalhotra entertains in a big way and primarily for the visuals and not as much for emotions. In effect, we have a film which could well have been Baahubali had the family emotions factor worked as extensively as well, but then the villain angle (Raavan) is so strong that it works in the favour of the film and you now want to see what lies ahead in Part 2 when #SunnyDeol makes an entry as well as #Hanuman.

A must watch theatrical experience.

Ravana is not glorified at all . The film thinks of you as an intelligent audience . There is no spoon feeding . Second half there is a scene clearly showing his psyche . Ram’s character also go through a whole growth arc . It’s not your basic film .

#Ramayana is a Big Screen Visual Spectacle that was promised. There are a few hiccups but it doesn't matter infront of all the moments that shine so bright, some never seen before. Consume it on the biggest screen possible to give justice to the effort put in. From India to the world indeed!
