Last quarter I rolled out Microsoft Copilot to 4,000 employees.
$30 per seat per month.
$1.4 million annually.
I called it "digital transformation."
The board loved that phrase.
They approved it in eleven minutes.
No one asked what it would actually do.
Including me.
I told everyone it would "10x productivity."
That's not a real number.
But it sounds like one.
HR asked how we'd measure the 10x.
I said we'd "leverage analytics dashboards."
They stopped asking.
Three months later I checked the usage reports.
47 people had opened it.
12 had used it more than once.
One of them was me.
I used it to summarize an email I could have read in 30 seconds.
It took 45 seconds.
Plus the time it took to fix the hallucinations.
But I called it a "pilot success."
Success means the pilot didn't visibly fail.
The CFO asked about ROI.
I showed him a graph.
The graph went up and to the right.
It measured "AI enablement."
I made that metric up.
He nodded approvingly.
We're "AI-enabled" now.
I don't know what that means.
But it's in our investor deck.
A senior developer asked why we didn't use Claude or ChatGPT.
I said we needed "enterprise-grade security."
He asked what that meant.
I said "compliance."
He asked which compliance.
I said "all of them."
He looked skeptical.
I scheduled him for a "career development conversation."
He stopped asking questions.
Microsoft sent a case study team.
They wanted to feature us as a success story.
I told them we "saved 40,000 hours."
I calculated that number by multiplying employees by a number I made up.
They didn't verify it.
They never do.
Now we're on Microsoft's website.
"Global enterprise achieves 40,000 hours of productivity gains with Copilot."
The CEO shared it on LinkedIn.
He got 3,000 likes.
He's never used Copilot.
None of the executives have.
We have an exemption.
"Strategic focus requires minimal digital distraction."
I wrote that policy.
The licenses renew next month.
I'm requesting an expansion.
5,000 more seats.
We haven't used the first 4,000.
But this time we'll "drive adoption."
Adoption means mandatory training.
Training means a 45-minute webinar no one watches.
But completion will be tracked.
Completion is a metric.
Metrics go in dashboards.
Dashboards go in board presentations.
Board presentations get me promoted.
I'll be SVP by Q3.
I still don't know what Copilot does.
But I know what it's for.
It's for showing we're "investing in AI."
Investment means spending.
Spending means commitment.
Commitment means we're serious about the future.
The future is whatever I say it is.
As long as the graph goes up and to the right.
This would be great. Here is my issue. Why would India or China not pursue this? Brazil? something does not add up. Be careful and weigh the options always. Also, remember death, while we do not wish, in time, is the start of a new life. Be blessed.

This is very insightful. Thanks for sharing. Nation building is never easy. It doesn’t help when the stated objective is nation building and the actual objective is milking the cow. While what you described is real, it is their excuse why nothing happens after spending trillions. If nation building is coming, best to start addressing this issue now.
It is not about the tariff which is a reasonable tool to use. It’s about belligerent attitude that the world got to see. Now it’s about humiliation. Nothing short of complete and total humiliation. How sad.
Economy will collapse in 4 to 8 weeks.
It is not always about money.

In 2011, I had a 100-day contract with a #USAID contractor in Afghanistan. They offered me a long-term contract with excellent pay. I said no.
That agency and its contractors, private and NGOs, needed serious reform then.
I am not against #DOGE but,
1. It was government policy that got so many people, staff for USAID and its contractor, and the many consultants to go into this line of work.
2. The education many perused was because of government policy.
The idea that a new government changes policy without recourse, at least for the many consultants and staff, is cruel. You do not right a wrong with a wrong. Every department of government seems to be focused on efficiency, yet no one is concerned about addressing the negative impacts on real people and families.
This does not mean there should not be serious reforms, rather, the reforms need to include a way to ensure least pain.
Many people cannot code. Even if they learn, AI is not going to leave them much room to succeed.
Yes, for reform, and yes to being fair and humane. A policy that fails to factor in the losers will not succeed. Even if it did, its success will be short lived.
There is so much hate on the left. There is so much hate on the right. Common sense lies in the middle.
Civil servants accepting the government buyout are either:
1. Close to retirement and just decided to retire early.
2. The smart ones who can get a better job in the private sector.
Should have introduced performance-based system and fired based on performance. It takes longer, but saves a lot more, and ensures government does not end up with the least capable less efficient.
Not against #DOGE, just don't like it when it loses the E.
The government is not X.
In a certain area, certain people at a certain time given money. Conclusions generalized and policies recommended. Maybe statistics should come with a warning label.
Yet another Universal Basic Income study was released just before the holidays.
While being given ~$500 per month in free money, participants only ended up $100 richer and smoked more cigarettes.
The full results are eye opening. (1/10)
