Entry Restricted to Those 65 and Older: What Makes “Bonjour Bakery” Different?
A unique variety show has emerged in South Korea’s super-aged society. It is Bonjour Bakery (봉주르빵집), a reality program that premiered on Coupang Play on May 8. The show centers on a small bakery opened in a rural village, where residents are welcomed as customers. Its distinctive rule is that only people aged 65 and older may enter the bakery.
Part café for seniors and part heartwarming entertainment showcasing their charm, Bonjour Bakery offers a fresh perspective on aging and community life.
A Curious Bakery Open Only to Seniors
Bonjour Bakery opened in Gapyeong Village in Gochang County, North Jeolla Province, a community of just 81 households where most residents are over 65.
Actors Cha Seung-won and Lee Ki-taek serve as the bakery’s baking team, while Kim Hee-ae and Kim Seon-ho handle customer service, taking orders, serving food, and preparing drinks. Although it is a variety show, the bakery operates much like a real one.
The program’s defining feature is its age restriction: only people aged 65 or older may enter. If at least one member of a group is over 65, others may accompany them. This rule creates amusing moments in which the cast personally checks customers’ identification cards.
The menu also reflects both local identity and senior-friendly tastes. Offerings include green barley tart and green barley cream puffs made from Gochang’s famous barley, as well as desserts featuring locally grown strawberries. The goal is to give older customers an opportunity to try new flavors without feeling overwhelmed.
Recently, Korean variety shows have increasingly explored themes such as rural depopulation and local communities. Programs like Bogum Magical and After-School Teacher Taeri are examples of this trend, and Bonjour Bakery fits within that broader movement.
Unlike some similar programs, however, it does not focus heavily on residents’ personal stories or deep emotional interactions. Instead, the cast maintains the kind of comfortable distance one would expect between bakery staff and customers. This approach reflects the producers’ intention to create a space where seniors can relax naturally with family and neighbors.
What makes Bonjour Bakery feel especially warm is its attitude toward older people. Rather than manufacturing dramatic moments, it captures everyday life. As a result, the show feels as though it exists somewhere between a variety program and a documentary.
The Genuine Charm of Older Adults
Most cafés, cultural venues, and media content are geared toward younger generations. In some cases, there have even been controversies surrounding so-called “No Senior Zones,” where older adults feel unwelcome.
Bonjour Bakery turns that trend upside down by making seniors the stars.
One of the program’s greatest strengths is the unfiltered authenticity of its elderly customers. They shyly step into the bakery, sometimes unfamiliar with terms like “Americano” or the names of desserts, choosing menu items based on pictures instead. Their delight at discovering new breads and pastries evokes the innocence of children experiencing something for the first time.
In the first episode’s epilogue, one grandmother remarked, “Just coming to the bakery was healing in itself.”
Another elderly man who visited with his granddaughter said, “I’m still useful, even at my age.”
Though simple, such comments reveal an ability to find joy in ordinary moments and leave a lasting impression on viewers.
“Actor Kim Seonho is departing for Manila, Philippines, on the afternoon of May 30 via Terminal 2 of Incheon International Airport in Unseo-dong, Jung-gu, Incheon, to attend the 2026 KIM SEON HO FANMEETING ASIA TOUR IN MANILA.”

And even the 94 year old harabeoji came to try the desserts. The hall team probably couldn't help but adore him so they planned together and prepared some baked treats as a gift for him as well. 🥰💞
“If you eat a strawberry all the way down to the stem, it means a lot to the farmers, and we’re thankful for it.” and seonho probably didn’t even know that, yet even the strawberry farm owner noticed 🥹

the way Seonho waited for his sunbaenims to take the first bite before he started eating too… his respect, manners, and consideration for others are always so evident, even in the smallest gestures.. 🥹🫠
