Here’s how the scam works, and it’s staggering.

Fraud rings use AI tools to mass-generate fake student applications, complete with synthetic identities, generated essays, and even AI-powered chatbots that respond to professor emails to keep the enrollment looking real. Once accepted, the ghost students collect financial aid disbursements, then disappear before anyone notices.

The scale is almost hard to believe: in 2024, nearly one in three community college applications in California were fraudulent. 1.2 million fakes, roughly $13 million in state and federal aid stolen.

This is what AI in the wrong hands looks like. And it’s exactly why we need leaders like @KevinKileyCA who actually understand the technology, and know how to stop it from being turned against the students who need that aid most.

The modern criteria for determining brain death were first established in 1968 by a committee at Harvard Medical School.

That’s when they came up with the core tests, no brain stem reflexes, no breathing on their own (the apnea test), flat EEG, and ruling out things like drugs or low body temperature.

The requirement for two doctors to confirm it isn’t in that original 1968 report, that came later as laws and hospital policies developed, especially in the 1980s and afterward when states adopted the Uniform Determination of Death Act. Some states still only require one physician, while others mandate two.

Many people who oppose brain death criteria believe that only God, not doctors, has the right to declare someone truly dead.

They view the heart as the true seat of life and soul, so as long as the heart is beating, even if it’s only because of machines, they consider the person still alive.

For them, removing life support or harvesting organs feels like humans playing God and ending a life prematurely. Some religious traditions, like certain Orthodox Jewish groups, some Christian denominations, and a few Islamic scholars, reject brain death entirely and only accept death when the heart stops beating on its own.

These families often feel that doctors are rushing the process for organ donation, and they want more time for prayer, miracles, or natural death. The conflict usually becomes very emotional and sometimes ends up in court.
