Indian authorities detained Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the anti-government “Cockroach” movement, along with two other movement leaders and thousands of protesters on Saturday.
Opposition politicians, journalists, student union leaders and lawyers were also among those detained.
The demonstrations were organized to demand the resignation of India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, over allegations that voter-list revisions favored Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party.
@IndiaUNGeneva OHCHR's concern is very much warranted considering the inhumane and violent way State Led machinery handled the protest. Considering India claims to be the largest democracy, police offers without badges brutally attacked students and other protestors and manhandled women.
