Organizations adopting this way of working focus on rigid team structures, strict rituals and events and an uneven distribution of behavior change requirements depending on how high up one sits in the organization. https://t.co/7avI4hO6TW
Since time immemorial, when a CEO asks a PM at Product Review, “what do you need to 10X users/revenue?”, “what will make you go faster?”, etc the PM steadfastly responds “We need [N] more engineers”. The Eng Mgr nods approvingly.
A story thread, with some hard truths to swallow:
Maybe I’m dumb, but I don’t see why you couldn’t replace a "platform team" that owns the code and guards it from "outsiders" with a group of platform consultants who literally worked with the teams to help make necessary changes. Bring platform knowledge to the teams as needed.
In theory, a design system is meant to provide a set of centralized building blocks and guidance.
In practice, it can easily be seen as a set of concerns that only a centralized group of people are responsible for.
Apps with GUIs are an inappropriate solution for most problems.
If your design practice revolves around making interfaces for apps, you've constrained your solution space to a fraction of its breadth before ever seeing the problem.
Product teams: I can’t overstate the importance of getting aligned on roles, vision, objectives and problem to be solved wary and often.
This is not a waste of time.
There are some labels I don't think we get to adopt for ourselves. Leader is one. Ally is another. Only the people around us can tell us if we're earning these. And if we feel the *need* for them to tell us...we probably aren't.

Such a simple North Star metric (15min walk from everything important) that has a wonderful forcing function for planners, designers, developers, etc.
