JUST IN: A sailor on the IRINS Dena called his father shortly before the torpedo hit. He told him that American forces had issued two warnings to abandon the vessel. The commander refused. An argument broke out among the crew. Some wanted to leave. The commander would not give the order.

Then the torpedo struck.

Thirty two sailors made it to lifeboats. The rest did not. Sri Lanka’s navy pulled the survivors from the water nineteen nautical miles off Galle. The bodies are still being recovered.

This account, reported by Iran International citing the survivor’s family, is a single source. It has not been independently verified. No official US statement confirms or denies that warnings were issued. The Iranian Navy has not commented on the commander’s decision. The account carries the weight of a son’s last phone call to his father, which is not the same as the weight of verified fact but is not nothing either.

If accurate, it means the United States followed the protocol international law contemplates: warn before you fire. Give the crew time to leave. The commander’s refusal collapsed the distinction between warship and human beings. The sailors who wanted to leave were overruled by an officer whose authority was absolute and whose decision was fatal.

The IRINS Dena was not in combat. She was sailing home from India’s International Fleet Review, where she had participated in multinational naval exercises alongside ships from fifty countries including Sri Lanka’s own navy. Three days earlier her officers had attended diplomatic receptions in Visakhapatnam. She was transiting international waters in the Indian Ocean, four thousand kilometers from the Persian Gulf, when a submarine that had been tracking her decided the war had reached those waters too.

The commander may have calculated that leaving meant surrendering Iran’s most modern frigate. In naval tradition, a captain does not abandon his vessel. But that tradition assumes the captain can see the threat. Against a submarine torpedo from below, there is no assessment. There is only the warning and the seconds between hearing it and acting.

Thirty two acted. The rest followed the commander’s order. The sea does not distinguish between obedience and choice.

This is the human dimension of the structural analysis. Behind every claim about Mosaic Defense and warlordization and interceptor depletion are individual human beings making decisions under conditions no training prepared them for.

A sailor called his father. His father now knows what happened in those final minutes. The rest of us know only the number: thirty two survived out of a crew whose full complement has not been officially disclosed but is estimated at 140 to 180.

The commander went down with his ship. Whether that was duty, defiance, or a failure to process that the exercise was over and the war had arrived is a question only the water off Galle can answer.
