Big Walnut is making the most of the program's 1st Regional appearance since 1997 with a 65-55 victory over Licking Heights for a spot in the Division II Elite Eight.
The Golden Eagles (16-9) got off to a slow start, trailing 13-11 after the opening frame, but responded with a 15-11 spurt in the 2nd Qtr to take a slim Halftime edge. A dominant 3rd Qtr stretch from senior forward Brayden McCruter, who scored 8 of his 13 points in the stanza, helped Big Walnut stretch out their cushion to 45-39 heading into the final frame.
A Hornets (20-5) run midway through the 4th Qtr put some pressure on the Golden Eagles who received major responses from backcourt mates Eli Stumpf and Brody Hatfield. The duo combined for 14 points over the final eight minutes, with Hatfield finishing with a game-high 19 to close out a Regional victory.
@BWBasketball will now face OCC rival #1 Westerville North (22-2) for a trip to the State Final Four on Saturday afternoon at Taft Coliseum.
