Pitching, in its most general sense, is the disruption of a hitter's timing.

Inducing weak contact, or swings and misses, is the goal.

Greg Maddux told me one time, during my first WBC when he was the @WBCBaseball @USABaseball pitching coach, that every pitch he delivered was thrown with the "intent" to get the hitter out.

Intent is the key word here.
