The reason these cities are full of squalor is not just because the city admins are corrupt etc. They are corrupt - true - but then many city admins across the world are.

The prime reason is they don't have the skills needed to make a good city. Like they can't even build good cities EVEN if they wanted to.

And the reason behind that is - the entire civ lacks this belief that cities are necessary. Wherever go you in India - this romantic idea of a village reigns supreme in the psyche.

Talk to any high iq citizen - doesn't matter who they are - they'll wax eloquent about villages. India lives in Villages - they'll say. I've seen many technologists say that.

France has cute villages cause their population is 66mn. They can look down upon le cities. But you can't.

Don't copy cute europe. Copy Tokyo.

You look down upon cities. So you don't learn anything that's needed to run a good city.

Then the rest of the gentry also has no clue. Poor souls will talk about aesthetics while not understanding that aesthetics is high volume sewage. Clean piped water. Mass transit. Garbage disposal. And that for millions.

Building garbage disposal for millions is aesthetics.

Go to any mega city in the east - Tokyo, Singapore, Shanghai and see how it's done. Glass towers or Indian architecture doesn't matter. That'll come later. First make the road ramps not be at 90 degrees.

Until you learn to build good cities, you'll never get anywhere.

Reminder - high gdp/capita is BECAUSE of good cities and infrastructure - and not the other way around.

One of THE MOST impactful changes we can make to urban roads in India is to maintain consistent road widths from one intersection to the next. Our current, variable road widths disrupt the orderly flow of traffic. For example, if there's just a bit of extra space on the side, auto-rickshaws attempt to squeeze in, causing chaos. If a road suddenly narrows from three lanes to two and a half, congestion follows.

In cities like London, when extra right-of-way is found, the footpaths are widened up to the road. But in Mumbai, we tend to expand the road instead. The issue with this approach is that the number of private vehicles in a densely populated city like Mumbai can grow without limits. Expanding roads only encourages more vehicles. On the other hand, widening footpaths doesn't cause the same problem because the space required for pedestrians is limited—walking is highly space-efficient.
