Bloodied Civil Rights Activists John Lewis & James Zwerg in Montgomery, Alabama, after having been attacked for their participation in a Freedom Ride on May 20, 1961. Zwerg, on the right, removes teeth knocked out by his attackers.
Three young newspaper boys, known as “newsies,” photographed at Skeeter’s Branch at the corner of Jefferson and Franklin in St. Louis, Missouri, at 11 a.m. on May 9, 1910. The image was taken by Lewis Hine.
Newsboys were a frequent focus of Hine’s social reform work, as many were children forced to work long hours.
From 1908 to 1924, Hine was employed by the National Child Labor Committee to document the harsh living and working conditions faced by children across the United States.
His photographs played a critical role in raising public awareness and helped pave the way for the passage of child labor laws.
