The celebrations also featured Science on a Sphere shows and culminated in the cultural programme, “Rhythms Beyond Research: Expressions of Talent and Creativity,” showcasing the artistic talents of NCPOR scientists and staff.

Dr. Thamban Meloth, Director of NCPOR, virtually chaired a Special Meeting of the Asian Forum for Polar Sciences #AFoPS on 29th March 2026 at the Arctic Science Summit Week #ASSW2026. The AFoPS is a leading polar body, founded 22 years ago, with six Members and four Observers. India is the current Chair of AFoPS.

Members of India’s first scientific expedition set foot on Antarctica and unfurled the Indian flag, marking the nation’s presence on the world’s most remotest Icy continent.

Launched in December 1981, expedition, codenamed “Operation Gangotri”, comprised of a 21-member team led by Dr. S. Z. Qasim, sailing aboard the Norwegian Ice-breaker M.V. Polar Circle.

PhD Viva Voce Defence Highlights

Congratulations to Ms Juhi Yadav, Project Scientist at NCPOR, on successfully defending her PhD Viva Voce Examination at Mangalore University on 24 December 2025. Her PhD research was carried out under the guidance of Dr. Avinash Kumar, Scientist-E & SIC, NCPOR.

Her doctoral thesis titled “Polar Sea-Ice Variability and Dynamics: Linkage between Ocean–Atmospheric Forcing,” focuses on understanding the drivers of Arctic and Antarctic sea-ice variability and the role of coupled ocean–atmosphere processes in shaping global climate systems. The research also provides important insights into the teleconnection between Arctic sea-ice variability and the Indian Summer Monsoon, highlighting how polar sea ice changes can influence regional weather patterns over the Indian subcontinent.

This national honour recognises his outstanding contributions to isotope geochemistry, paleoclimatology, and cryospheric research, and stands as an inspiration for young scientists striving for excellence in research and innovation.

The 11th India International Science Festival (#IISF2025), held in Panchkula, Chandigarh from 6–9 December, was a remarkable celebration of India’s strength in science and innovation. We are delighted to share that the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) received the Best Overall Pavilion Award at the Mega Science & Technology Expo!

The award was presented by Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh, Hon’ble Governor of Haryana, during the Closing & Valedictory Ceremony — a proud moment for the entire MoES family.

At the 11th edition of the India International Science Festival (IISF2025) Mega Expo, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Earth Sciences, inaugurated the MoES–NCPOR pavilion, celebrating India’s leadership in polar and ocean sciences.

Joined by Hon’ble Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment, Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar, and Secretary, MoES, Dr M. Ravichandran, HMoES also interacted live with the Indian expedition team members at Maitri and Bharati Stations, Antarctica. The team received high appreciation for their resilience, scientific excellence, and outstanding contributions to understanding the Earth’s polar systems.

The Minister’s encouraging message reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to advancing polar research and strengthening India’s global scientific presence.

A vibrant start to #IISF2025 as NCPOR scientists connected with students and visitors, sharing fascinating insights into India’s Polar and Ocean research. Participants learned about India’s major research stations—Bharati & Maitri in Antarctica, Himadri in the Arctic, and high-altitude observations in the Himalayas—and their vital role in understanding Earth’s climate systems.

The highlight of the day was the Stunning Virtual Reality tour of Antarctica, giving visitors a rare, lifelike experience of the icy continent and the scientific work carried out there.

The Celebration of Science: India International Science Festival Begins!

The curtain raiser for IISF 2025 will be held on 13 November 2025 at the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa.

The theme, “Vigyan Se Samruddhi: For Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” reflects India’s commitment to advancing science, research, and innovation as pillars of national growth and Aatmanirbharta.

IISF 2025 will be organized by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in collaboration with the Government of India’s scientific ministries and departments (@CSIR_NIScPR, @IndiaDST, @DBTIndia , @DAEIndia , @isro) along with VIBHA.

The festival will bring together scientists, researchers, students, industries, and innovators to celebrate and showcase India’s scientific prowess.
