In 1978, Eddie Aikau was on the Hōkūleʻa when it capsized, and he never came home. Forty-eight years on, the legendary canoe is still crossing oceans, and Nainoa Thompson, a young navigator-in-training who watched Eddie paddle away, is still steering it. https://t.co/Tv0M44uukK
France: Following the October 17 protests that turned violent, media report the Prime Minister’s office introduced partial curfews for Monday, October 19 and Tuesday, October 20 in several cities across France, including Lille. Media report more curfews may follow for parts of Paris and in prefectures across the country, and that scattered protests could continue. Avoid the areas of the demonstrations. Two weeks after the FBI arrested an Irvine realtor at LAX for allegedly surveilling the son of Taiwan’s president for China, a federal judge just ordered her held without bail as a flight risk.
Wanying “Heather” Zhang remains locked up. Prosecutors cited her immediate family in China (including a brother with government ties), ~$190k in a Chinese account tied to an unregistered crypto exchange, and the one-way ticket to Shanghai she already had when agents stopped her. Her side offered $1.2 million in property and pointed to her husband and two young kids in California—the judge wasn’t convinced.
A grand jury indicted her on October 9 for conspiracy and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. Her alleged partner on the Seattle surveillance trip, a California businessman in his 50s, fled to China and hasn’t been charged.
The university where a classmate first connected her to a Chinese official sits next to the headquarters of China’s Ministry of State Security.
Taiwan called it transnational repression. Beijing says it knows nothing.
U.S Department of Homeland Security (DHS) just gave every federal civilian agency 60 days to rip DeepSeek out of their systems entirely.
The order, made public October 19, bans federal agencies from buying or using any DeepSeek products, plus any third-party tools built on top of DeepSeek’s models. That covers everything from direct procurement to tools quietly running DeepSeek underneath.
The reasoning is blunt. DeepSeek’s models and servers operate in China, where national security laws give the government broad legal authority to access private company data. Every prompt a federal employee types, every response the model generates, could become a pipeline for sensitive information flowing straight to Beijing. DHS also flagged potential malware and security vulnerabilities baked into the models themselves.
This isn’t a sudden move. The underlying order was actually signed back in July, agencies have quietly been working under these restrictions for months before the public even found out. Commerce and the Navy had already restricted DeepSeek internally, and states like New York, Tennessee, and Virginia moved on their own earlier too.
One important carve-out: this only applies to federal civilian agencies. The Pentagon, intelligence community, and private citizens aren’t covered. You can still use DeepSeek on your personal laptop.
The message underneath all the legal language is simple: your government doesn’t trust where your prompts might end up.
Brazilian sells everything and travels 2,000 km to meet his AI-generated girlfriend
Edimar, a 49-year-old bricklayer, fell in love with a blonde woman named Jessica Oliveira after stumbling across her blog on social media.
She promised to find a man willing to move to her farm, where she would fully support him. Edimar believed her, sold all his belongings and travelled 2,000 km to meet her.
But when he arrived, he discovered that Jessica did not exist. Her appearance had been generated by artificial intelligence, and the messages had been sent by an automated bot.
The man eventually turned to social services for help getting back home.
🇫🇷🇷🇺 French intelligence agencies have confirmed that Russia-linked bot networks are weaponizing the past weekend's violent riots by flooding social media with old, recycled, and AI-generated fake videos of police brutality to provoke the rioters even further.
Russian networks like "Matryoshka" are acting as digital opportunistic arsonists, intentionally exaggerating the scale of the chaos to simulate nationwide civil unrest.
CHAOS INC: A Fox News Digital investigation by @FoxNews Digital's senior editor of investigations @AsraNomani has identified 54 organizations behind France's escalating protests — a sprawling network of communist parties, revolutionary socialist groups, labor unions, Palestine-solidarity organizations and international media outlets working to transform grievances into a full-blown revolt against capitalism, government austerity and military spending.
Now, 28 communist and socialist youth organizations across 12 European countries are mobilizing for a coordinated November 20 strike under the slogan "Fight for Our Future, Not Their Wars," calling for walkouts, blockades, occupations and mass demonstrations.
Among the international amplifiers: organizations tied to Neville Roy Singham, a Marxist tech tycoon living in Shanghai, whose network includes Tricontinental and BreakThrough News, a New York-based outlet that published advance coverage of the weekend's mayhem in France.
