"Lee Jae-myung, step down!" "Stand trial!"
On October 3, National Foundation Day, tens of thousands filled central Seoul for the second year in a row. Police estimated about 28,000 on Sejong-daero alone.
Why "Stand trial"?
President Lee Jae-myung was charged in five criminal cases before taking office. One involves an illegal $8 million payment to North Korea. The Supreme Court overturned his acquittal in the election-law case. A month later he won the presidency, and all five trials were suspended under constitutional immunity.
On October 2, the agency that indicted him was abolished.
Meanwhile, an American is on trial in Seoul. Former U.S. Ambassador Morse Tan repeated rumors about the president at a press conference in Washington. Prosecutors say the rumors are false and have charged him with defamation. He has been barred from leaving Korea. Members of the U.S. Congress say his First Amendment rights must be respected.
Five trials, zero verdicts. When does South Korea's president face a judge? 👇
Gulbahar Haitiwaji’s Testimony of Resilience and Survival https://t.co/mjTMu9wnsD Speaking in London, the Uyghur author of a memoir on her years in a Chinese camp described the price of bearing witness and the solidarity among detained women.
"The victim became the perpetrator."
A journalist describes what staggered him most about the aftermath of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's assassination.
The gunman blamed the Unification Church. In the journalist's view, that made the church a victim of the attack too. Instead, it ended up on trial in the court of public opinion almost overnight.
What followed, he says, was a witch hunt.
But the people leading it weren't new to this fight. They had started in 1987, to stop "Victory Over Communism" and to kill the church on paper.
Decades of files, with no ending.
Until now.
