Dr. Erustus Kanga, the Director General of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), officially launched the Kenya Bird Trends Online Platform today at the Nairobi Safari Walk. This platform demonstrates the integration of tradition and innovation through the collective efforts of citizen science, all aimed at the sustainable management of our nation's avian heritage.

In his remarks, Dr. Kanga emphasized that the launch represents a significant milestone in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to conserve its rich avifauna diversity. Kenya is home to 121 Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), 68 of which are based on Important Bird Areas (IBAs), serving as critical habitats and migratory flyways for countless bird species. Some of these species travel from as far as Eurasia to visit our lands.

Dr. Kanga called for collaboration among all citizens, scientists, policymakers, and conservationists. He urged everyone to participate in bird mapping and address the challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. These threats, including habitat loss, deforestation, poaching, and pesticide use, significantly impact bird populations. #TunzaMaliYako
