@KLaz_1212@thanasis263@PlayStation Made-up metrics ('panic algorithm', '$6M loss') - that's the actual zero-sourcing issue, not Reddit/Twitter being the source for the discount itself.
@NewsProspector@ValhallaOutcast Posting volume isn't the same as mass sentiment - that's the whole algorithm-amplification thing. And 'like most people' isn't debatable, it's the actual sales data: 78-85% digital already, PS3 CMOS issue's been known for years with zero impact on adoption.
@imunknownE4@ItsCass9@ValhallaOutcast It's not really about the 'for now' wording - the mass just doesn't care regardless, same as with every other part of this whole disc/digital debate.
@NewsProspector@ValhallaOutcast The mass doesn't care regardless - digital sales keep climbing. What's your actual point? I've been digital-only for 15 years and, like most people, couldn't care less whether PS3 servers get shut down - which hasn't even been announced yet
@trapper12@Genki_JPN Third-party key access outside the PS Store would likely come back in the UK/EU if the lawsuits succeed - that's the actual remedy being sought, not just speculation.
@XO_SPlay@Dexerto Check the actual numbers: digital adoption went from 13% at PS4 launch in 2013 to 78-85% now. Sony's just catching up to where the market already went.
@trapper12@Genki_JPN Steam licenses aren't fundamentally different though - still revocable access, not ownership. The actual advantage there is GOG (DRM-free), not Steam specifically. And wait until Gabe Newell isn't running the show anymore before assuming Steam's some permanent safe haven.
@trapper12 PS6 going digital-only has been obvious for years. And games still install locally - nothing like Stadia's pure streaming model. PS6 won't fail over dropping discs, disc lovers have become too small a minority to make that happen.
@kodekaldwin 18 months of lead time is a lot though - plenty of room for partners to adjust even with a late heads-up. And Kojima's concern was about the whole entertainment industry going digital, not specifically Sony's move.
@Zuby_Tech 'Hardcore fanbase' is doing a lot of work here - the actual signal (petition, sales data) says otherwise. Loud minority, not the fanbase. And the disc's end is coming either way - customers already chose digital, whether people like it or not.
@trapper12@Genki_JPN I know. Relitigating the disc itself doesn't change anything now - the planet's already chosen digital. Anyone who wants otherwise can stick to pre-2028 physical titles and figure out their own path from there.
@JohnnyBoysGame@InsiderGamingIG 1 million for what? Even 1M would still be a tiny fraction against tens of millions of digital-only users, and digital purchases keep climbing every year regardless.
@trapper12@Genki_JPN Discs aren't what makes or breaks a console's success - the minority who need physical can move on or hold onto their current setup. If they were, digital adoption wouldn't keep climbing every single year the way it has.
@PorkPoncho No - the energy fizzles out. Probably why Sony's staying quiet: attention spans are short, people move on fast. Even the petition shows how low actual interest is. And there's still 18 months of discs left anyway.
@okiechristopher@gillythekidYT Real reasons people stick with consoles have nothing to do with discs: exclusives, plug-and-play convenience, no Windows headaches, no bad PC ports, and cheaper hardware than an equivalent gaming PC. Digital purchases keep rising every year, and GTA 6 hasn't even launched yet.
@DaReelSebas Fair point on communication style - Xbox/Nintendo are quietly doing similar things. Nintendo's had pricier physical since 21. May. Sony's mistake was naming a date, not the strategy. Digital keeps rising every year, and GTA 6 will only speed that up.
@ivvanex Based on what data, though? Backlash is already loud regardless of timing - the actual signal (petition at 164K) hasn't grown proportionally with the outrage. There's no sign waiting makes the real impact worse, just the noise from a loud few getting louder.
