PRIMARY SPONTANEOUS PNEUMOTHORAX

Young 21 yr old man presented with sudden onset breathlessness and chest pain in my OPD. My Clinical examination was consistent with Pneumothorax, which was immediately confirmed on an X-ray.

In Layman terms - Pneumothorax is collection of air inside the chest, but outside the lung, leading to compression, collapse of lung and also compression on the heart and opposite lung leading to severe drop in oxygen saturation, fast heart rate, severe breathlessness, which if not relieved immediately can be fatal.

X-rays at initial presentation & after evacuation of air through emergency insertion of Chest tube can be seen below. An invaluable young life saved!

BUT, WHAT IF ONE CAN'T HAVE ACCESS TO HOSPITAL (e.g. in a flight!) ?

FOR Such DIRE EMERGENCIES-

In case of a Doctor (or a healthcare professional/well trained personnel) on board

“Needle” Decompression - which involves inserting a hollow needle into the space between the ribs to evacuate the air from the chest + oxygen therapy can be Life Saving!

@JioCare Thanks for the response. When we visited last they found the DoB record is different between adhaar and jio database. They could not proceed. Is there a solution for it?
