Some days leave scars that history cannot erase.

On 16 July 2025, Gopalganj witnessed a deadly confrontation during the National Citizen Committee’s “March to Gopalganj.” As protests escalated, security forces launched an operation that remains deeply contested. Official reports confirmed several deaths, while political groups and eyewitnesses alleged a much higher toll, widespread injuries, and a subsequent cover-up. These allegations remain disputed.

A curfew silenced the district, but it could not silence the questions.

What happened that day? Who was responsible? And will there ever be a transparent, independent accounting of the events?

The people of Gopalganj deserve truth, justice, and accountability. The memories of 16 July 2025 should not be forgotten.⁩

#BNP Govt’s Authoritarian Policies Extends to Funeral Prayers for Political Opponents: 7 Detained at Tofail Ahmed’s Janaza in #Dhaka.

In a #democracy, arrests cannot be used as a substitute for political legitimacy. What is Prime Minister #TariqueRahman so afraid of that #police are now detaining people at funeral prayers?

Yesterday, seven individuals were detained during the first Janaza (Muslim funeral prayer) of veteran politician and independence-era leader Tofail Ahmed in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area.

It increasingly appears that the BNP Govt’s strategy is to arrest as many political activists as possible, leaving little room for opposition voices.

At BDWatch, we have documented arrests of #AwamiLeague leaders and activists on an everyday basis under the Anti-Terrorism Act for a wide range of non-criminal conduct, including preparing for processions, chanting the “Joy Bangla” slogan, communicating with senior party leaders, and other legitimate activities.

Following Tofail Ahmed’s Janaza, some attendees reportedly chanted the slogan “Joy Bangla.” Police claimed that a group was preparing to take out a procession and create public disorder, leading to the detention of at least seven individuals.

However, senior #journalist Anis Alamgir, who was present at the scene, comfirmed that those detained had simply come to pay their final respects to a senior political figure who had touched the lives of many #Bangladeshis.

Arresting mourners at a funeral raises serious concerns about political freedoms, freedom of expression, and the shrinking space for dissent in Bangladesh.

It also begs the question whether PM Tarique Rahman naively thinks he can simply arrest all his political opponents away.
