On this day in 1865, enslaved people in Texas were notified by Union Civil War soldiers about the abolition of slavery. This was 2.5 years after the final Emancipation Proclamation which freed all enslaved Black Americans. #Juneteenth

Did you know George Washington Carver was also an artist?

At the age of 30, Carver gained acceptance to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where he was the first Black student. Carver studied piano and art.

He overcame slavery to achieve fame as a scientist, botanist and educator. He invented over 300 uses for peanuts and he’s responsible for much more.
He's credited for the idea of crop rotation to improve soil health.

YT MAN RELEASED AFTER CHOKING BLACK MENTALLY ILL MAN TO DEATH ON SUBWAY

When he was just 18 years old, Jordan Neely's life was torn apart. His mother's remains were found stuffed into a suitcase, murdered by her boyfriend. Neely testified at the trial, and when it was all said and done, tried to continue with his life, making a living as a Michael Jackson impersonator. The trauma from his mother's murder stuck with him though, and Neely battled with mental health issues, ultimately losing his ability to pay for housing and ending up on the streets.

On Monday, Neely was on the F Train, when he allegedly began to yell about how much he needed food and not caring about if he gets arrested.

Instead of anyone offering to help meet his physical needs, a YT marine attacked Neely and put him in a chokehold. According to witnesses, the man choked Neely for 15 minutes. When he finally let him go, Neely was dead. The killer was taken in for questioning and then released.

This is egregious. The killer needs to be arrested and charged with murder. Yelling about needing food is not a crime punishable by death. No one was in clear and imminent danger. There's no justification for this and the fact that the killer was released is further proof of how anti-Black the so-called justice system and police are.
