Perhaps it’s being the father of two sons similar in age. When I learned of the horrific death of Charlie Kirk, I moved beyond the loss of a political leader. I saw a son. Gone. I mourn for a daughter and her shocking loss of a husband. And two beautiful children, left to grow up without a father. Heartbreaking. Tragic. Senseless. And yes, feel the same heartbreak for the parents who lost their babies in Minneapolis and, along with the survivors, are dealing with that trauma. And all other similar tragedies. Don’t let these tragedies dehumanize us. These are real people, good people…sons and daughters…fathers and mothers…our neighbors. This isn’t who we are as Americans. Prayers for comfort for the Kirk family. And for strength for America that we can act to figure this out, together.

Madam Secretary, you have a hard job. We share common goals of a strong, prosperous America, which we work to build every day. You’re right, our companies and workers are patriotic. We are American companies, making American products, with American workers in America’s hometowns. We are the companies providing the good, family-supporting American jobs the president wants – the type where a person without a college education can provide for their family and not be on SNAP. This is what you are denigrating, whether you mean to or not. We will always stand proudly by our members, workers and products. Our hope is that we can work together on solutions that will make a difference. We certainly stand ready to do so.
