i hope to be in community w/ folks who remind me to not only open doors but also strive towards removing them entirely. there is a lot of privilege, opportunity and luck that went into shaping my journey, and i want to give support to peers + aspiring journos however i can.

For the last year, I helped drive innovative storytelling as a data viz reporter for the Houston Landing. Now, my newsroom is shutting down.
It's a tough blow, but I couldn’t be prouder to have worked alongside such talented people. Here are some of my favorite accomplishments:
I’ve been here at @Hou_Landing for the past year now. I’ve only been part time as their data fellow – but the impact of the work, the people here, I can’t express enough how gracious I am to have shared this experience with them. (1/3)

Hillary contributed so much to the Landing in the time she was here — including our first Vietnamese translation! Any newsroom would be lucky to have her.
for stories, jobs or any tips, you can reach me at my personal email fpkuzhiyil at gmail dot com. thank you for all the texts, replies and overall support today.
there is truly no other industry i would ever want to work in and the love surrounding me today reminds me why.
i'm writing a story for Business Insider about international students who've had their visas revoked or funding cut to their program. if that's you, please email me at [email protected] or shoot me a secure tip via Signal at @jdeng.20. 🙏
The Federal Advisory Committee on Long COVID has been ordered terminated on 2/19/25 within 14 days.
“the Secretary of Health and Human Services shall terminate the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Long COVID.”

It wasn't just wealthy celebrities that lost homes in the Pacific Palisades. It was also working-class, middle-class families in Altadena, a diverse community of homeowners, renters who lost everything in the Eaton fire.
I spoke to them for @teenvogue. https://t.co/5n9io7TuDU
If you or someone you know in Berkeley is putting together a drive for LA wildfire relief, I’d love to highlight in @berkeleyside’s weekly events roundup or The Scene, our arts+culture newsletter, which goes out on Thursdays. Pls reach out here or at [email protected] 💕
LA JOURNALISTS: I'm swamped with story assignments but I have some leads on some issues folks have been having in disaster relief, with discrimination, stealing, etc. If you're a local reporter please hit me up if you want my contacts. Residents need someone to follow up on this.
In a world where big wins feel hard, a bunch of small wins can lead to the momentum and inspiration we all need. Even a simple #LongCovid social graphic can reach 1-2 new people (or go viral). Also thinking about what small asks can we better make to current & potential allies?
Last year @thesicktimes was started by just two people, @betsyladyzhets & @mileswgriffis, which has been so important for #LongCovid — all the LC orgs are not much bigger. I'd love to encourage folks to think of 1 small (or big idea) they can do in 2025 in small groups, or alone!
I feel like the community is feeling pretty drained & defeated. No treatments or sustained recognition, & so few allies — yet #LongCovid is impacting every aspect of society. Still, I'm so impressed with what small groups of even 1-2 people accomplish & contribute every year.
One of the articles I’ve been the happiest working on came out today. And the part I worked on isn’t why it’s one of my favorites.
It’s about birds, and why there are so dang many of them in the Bay Area.
(Hear me out)
