Modern civilian cremation is not a useful comparison. Civilian crematoria normally cremate one body at a time, often in a coffin, under regulated conditions. The SS operated the Auschwitz furnaces continuously, without such restrictions. Bodies were cremated without coffins, and more than one body could be placed in a muffle at the same time.

The Auschwitz complex also had far more capacity than a single modern crematorium. By 1943, the SS had installed 52 cremation muffles in Auschwitz I and Birkenau. An SS construction document of 28 June 1943 gave a theoretical combined capacity of 4,756 bodies per 24 hours.

Even that figure does not tell the whole story. When the number of victims exceeded the capacity of the furnaces, particularly during the mass deportation of Hungarian Jews in 1944, the SS also burned bodies in open-air pits and pyres. This practice is documented by photographs, German records and eyewitness testimony.

Claims about postwar bricks usually concern Crematorium I at Auschwitz I. In late 1944, the SS converted this building into an air-raid shelter, dismantling the furnaces and chimney and altering the interior. After the war, parts of its earlier appearance were reconstructed using surviving German plans and original components. Later conservation work naturally also introduced postwar building materials.

The situation at Birkenau is different. Crematoria II, III, IV and V were destroyed by the SS before the camp was liberated. Their ruins remain preserved today.
