@PersingNicole@MsBirdsWords@lexi_mcphee These techniques are beneficial to students of all ages. I hadn't thought to include them before, but it makes sense. All students need these skills for self regulation, and why not teach them when they are remote. #643Sp21#SPOResearch1
@DMcElheny Sarcasm is a challenge for so many students to get even when in person, so it makes sense to avoid it online when verbal cues are harder to read. #643Sp21#SPOResearch1
@Jneher2 I felt that online teaching took too much energy and 3x as much time. We can't require students to show up for Zoom calls, which results in hunting down students at all hours of the day. My family and mental health suffer then. #643Sp21#SPOResearch1
@DMcElheny I thought the same thing with each article. Now, I will take this knowledge of social presence and make sure to include it when we are virtual again. #643Sp21#NotADog
@philcoffmanMP It seems that making social presence required is about the only way to get students to buy in. No, it isn't intrinsic motivation, but it is a start until they realize the benefits themselves. #643Sp21#NotADog
@queen_diva1@FREEMAN_Outside Agreed. I like seeing the connections we have even though we all work with different students/learners. I'd say this assignment is working :) #643Sp21#NotADog
"Positive effects for students studying online when there is a high level of social presence, include higher levels of interaction, greater sense of trust, stronger feelings of community, and higher levels of student satisfaction as a result" #643Sp21#NotADog
"some students may need to be coaxed into interaction" Making comments on responses is an age old and highly impactful requirement. My bad-didn't do it last time we were remote. Will next time though! #643Sp21#NotADog
"Online learners may thus need to be encouraged to give up at least a bit of their anonymity
by sharing their thoughts and drawing upon their personal histories and individual backgrounds as they
interact together" Risky Business! #643Sp21#NotAdog
@rkehawes Boundaries within these types of communication is necessary and hard to define. Otherwise, teaching and communicating with students can easily take over "downtime" @ home. HS kids are awake far later than me! #643Sp21#GetPresent
@MsBirdsWords@Kirksey_choir Absolutely! Each day F2F is a blessing. When we returned, it was like, "You can't avoid me now!" Feedback is much faster F2F, but I am thankful for auto-comments in Google Docs. #643Sp21#GetPresent
@DMcElheny Regular feedback helps keep the relationship open and present, something that would happen naturally if F2F. Makes sense! #643Sp21#GetPresent
Teachers can create virtual locations to socialize when remote--I did this when shut down and saw relationships that didn't normally happen flourish. Helped secluded students from all walks of life feel connected. #643Sp21#GetPresent
All five elements must be employed "in order for the environment to work" and instructors play a key role. What areas AA, CC, II, KE, IV, are strengths in your course? Weaknesses? #643Sp21#GetPresent
