@Jenn_Mosley2022 The knowledge acts as the box of blocks for constructing their new understanding. Selecting, connecting, reorganizing. The prior knowledge goes far beyond ABCs now: structure of sites, search engines, even indicators of a hyperlink.
Remixing cultural works is not new, but is now widely accessible with digital media and the Internet. Are there original ideas anymore? Can we value the original and the remix? Can we teach originality? #edu800fall22#knobel
The immediacy of digital media changes the strategies and processing. One can access, create, and share any number of artifacts in a fraction of the time of print. However, are students prepared to use that power? #edu800fall22#knobel
Prior knowledge of structure is crucial for new literacies. Drop a laptop in the 1900s, would the skilled readers of the time function effectively? The technology adds layers to required skills. #edu800fall22#knobel
@ally_leeeeee Maybe sooner. The pandemic propelled some areas forward, but forced others to a screeching halt. I'm curious what holes we'll find in that decade or so.
With the rapidly changing field of literacy, multiple perspectives are more important than ever. Early childhood, adolescents, older adults, hypertext, multimodal; all pieces of the ever expanding literacy puzzle. #edu800fall22#leu
Serafini suggests 4 reader-viewer resources: navigator, interpreter, designer, and interrogator. Internet readers are not only traditional readers, they are modern explorers making meaning out of diverse and vast representations. #edu800fall22#leu
"...the Internet becomes this generation's defining technology for literacy and learning. " With the world and the world's text/multimedia at their fingertips, new literacies are required. How do we support educators through the ongoing change? #edu800fall22#leu
@ally_leeeeee This is a challenge. I think we're skewed in considering "digital natives," some functioning is more like floundering. There are different strengths depending on the individual's background in technology. Clear competencies and well designed PD to start.
An issue of equity, economically disadvantaged youth are less likely to engage in high quality digital practices. Youth can be taught and socialized to use digital media tools creatively. Why aren't we engaging them effectively with the existing tools? #edu800fall22#mills
New literacies shift from consumption of media to creative production of digital media. Students can successfully co-construct knowledge through creative production. These are 21st century job and life skills. #edu800fall22#mills
#mills Multimedia meanings are more than text+image. They are shaped by contextual elements. If new literacies go beyond text, we must consider multi-disciplinary perspectives. #edu800fall22
@ally_leeeeee I think it is. Readers may be attempting to use or translate strategies from one medium to another. How effective that is could be up for debate.
@K_Grunow I think it is an expansion of traditional printed text literacies. Readers have the traditional text processes, but add search and site structure. The self-regulation requirement is bumped up as well.
Readers need to draw on four sets of prior knowledge for effective reading on the internet: topic, printed text structures, web-based search engines, and informational site structure. Learning the structures and how to search is beneficial. #edu800fall22#Coiro
Self-regulation is crucial for reading on the internet. In the fast-paced online world, how do we cultivate strategies to intentionally evaluate and adjust? #edu800fall22#coiro
Reading as a composing process: organizing previous knowledge to build new understanding. Skilled, online readers construct external text with each choice during the reading and exploration processes. #newliteracies#edu800fall22#coiro
@queen_diva1 Absolutely. I do pre-sessions to get everyone more comfortable. It takes a significant amount of time and effort though. I have to plan my time differently to accommodate.
Considering background experience of online adult learners resonates with my work. Many of my students had never taken an online class or even heard of Zoom, D2L, etc. Opportunities to stretch their comfort zones in a safe way has been vital.
